Embracing the Tango Magic: the Here and Now

Updated: Jan 15

Hey fellow tango enthusiasts,

Ever find yourself delving into the profound mysteries of tango, especially when explaining it to those who haven't yet succumbed to the addiction? Recently, a discussion sparked with a non-tango person about why tango holds a special place in our hearts. Sure, we mentioned the global community, the unique connection in the embrace, the meditative quality of the dance, and the beauty of completely surrendering to the connection with another person. But amidst these usual suspects, a brilliant argument emerged that I couldn't help but share with you all.

Picture this: "You can't live through the same tango twice. Even if you dance with the same partner, to the same music, in the same place, each time it would be different. Why? Because you would be different, and so will your partner. Your emotions would be different, your feelings in that moment..."

This insight struck a chord, reminding me of a gem from Alejandra Mantinan (forgive my paraphrasing): you're in the here and now, you need to occupying this space and time with all YOU. No moment is replicated, and this is your only chance to seize it. Use it well.

I resonate deeply with these thoughts because they force me to focus on the present, to relish the unique moment with the chosen partner, to the music we've chosen in the space we've selected. The stars aligned, the universe conspired, and this moment will never recur.

The fleeting nature of tango serves as a poignant reminder to pour all of ourselves into the dance—our skills, techniques, emotions, and, most importantly, our very essence. Right here, right now. This moment is one-of-a-kind and deserves to be cherished.

In the midst of our fast-paced lives, where we often navigate from one commitment to the next in a zombie-like trance, tango demands a pause. It compels us to mindfully and purposefully focus on the present.

As I pen down these thoughts, I can't help but marvel at the magic of tango moments, even as someone who might be a tad skeptical of such new age mumbo-jumbo.

So, fellow tango addicts, let's embrace the magic, live in the now, and dance like there's no tomorrow, no one else. Mistakes don't exist. Audience does not exist. Just you, the music and your partner. Because in tango, every step, every embrace, and every note of music is a unique masterpiece that will never be replicated. Cherish the magic, my friends, and keep dancing into the enchanting unknown of each new moment.
